  1. Subject: KNUST to investigate students of KUHIS on Admission

Kumasi, July 1, GNA - The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), is to ensure that henceforth, any student to be admitted to the university, from Kumasi High School (KUHIS), will have his background thoroughly investigated by the KNUST Authorities. Professor Kwesi Andam, Vice-Chancellor of the KNUST, who announced this, said the measure was directed at the KUHIS because of its notoriety for indiscipline conducts in the past and in recent times. He said the move was therefore to help protect "KNUST from any infestation by such indiscipline students of KUHIS who might be considered for admission into KNUST".

Professor Andam made the announcement when he addressed the Nineth Speech and Prize-Giving Day/Graduation ceremony of the KNUST Junior Secondary School (JSS), in Kumasi on Thursday.

The occasion was used to present awards to a number of deserving students and teachers, and certificates of the school to 422 graduates of the school who wrote their Basic Examination Certificate of Education (BECE) in April this year.

The Vice-Chancellor stressed, "KNUST wants to remain pure and continue to pride itself with an untainted image and will therefore never accept students who form and emerge out of groups supposedly, named "Talaban and Aqueeda" ".

Professor Andam reminded students that Ghana had invested huge sums of funds in their education, and therefore, there was the need for them to refrain from "acts of indiscipline that turn to jeopardise efforts of Ghanaians at improving and sustaining national developments".

Mrs. Theodosia Jackson, Headmistress of the KNUST JSS, called on the Ghana Education Service to develop a more comprehensive data for academic assessment of schools to enable it reflect the true records of performances of JSS and senior secondary schools.

She said this is crucial because the data that was compiled in respect of grading and ranking of performances of JSS in the BECE for last year, was not a true reflection of the performance of some schools, especially the KNUST JSS.

Mrs. Theodosia stated, "I do not believe the rankings in respect of the BECE for last year, is accurate, in the sense that the schools ranked to have performed better than the KNUST JSS, registered not more than 120 candidates while we registered 484 candidates".

Master Samuel Owusu-Agyemang, the KNUST JSS prefect, in a report, appealed to parents to pay more frequent visits to the school to enable them assess the progress of their wards and acquaint themselves with the problems of the school.

Mr. N. Twumasi Amponsah, Kumasi Metropolitan Director of Education who presided, lauded the staff and students of the KNUST JSS for their excellent academic works and discipline and urged them to keep it up.

  1. RE:KNUST to investigate students of KUHIS on Admission

  • ABRANTE ohene :I find Prof. Andam's claim for a background check on future students of KNUST who would come from Kumasi High School discriminatory.

Of course, it is understandable to ensure that our students and future leaders of our nation receive the training that merit responsiblity and accountablity. This is where I would agree with the Professor that zero tolerance for insubodination should be the goal of the University. Because Sobriety, discipline and submissiion to leadership and authority are indispensable attributes of success at any level of any society, including Ghana. Therefore, the need to ensure that certain standards be met. But to single out a school and the students is discriminatory and unjustified.

We cannot raise the bar for one group of students and lower it for others simply because three or four rowdy students have caused violence in their school. The professor cannot tell the nation that everybody in High School was involved and therefore every student is violent. My take is that if KNUST will do a background check on all new students, so be it but to do a check on some and leave the rest is below the belt.

This is not in anyway to condone the violence or the bad behavior of some of the students in the school. Neither is this a bid to justify the error but we cannot allow the school and the students to be used as scape goats.

Scape goats? Yes! What about the schools where the students are known to be alcoholics? We all read News Reports about incidents of alcoholism among JSS students. We saw pictures of children who were drunk! They cannot be excused if they have to enter the university because alcoholism cannot be tolerated at the Universities since statistics prove that alcohol and violence are partners in business.

What about the "hedonists" and the pleasure seekers? What about schools where murder is known to have occured periodically? What about the schools where sexual promiscuity is their order? Can the KNUST admit these students without a background check?

What am I saying? What I am saying to you is "OBIARA BA NYE". There are bad apples in every school and it will be a grave mistake to single out a school to make laws for while the rest go untouched

If the school is no good, then the Ministry of Education should shut it down but do not discriminate against them

Let's watch out otherwise we will ignorantly justify discrimination in a country where freedom and justice is our emblem.

  • KOFI AGYEI: Sir, This is a good way of curbing indiscipline in our schools but why restrict it to Kumasi High School. Though they have been in the news these days, I dont think the VC is being fair to the school. What about Presec Legon, whose students were involved in an armed robbery at a supermarket in Accra? Schools with students with guns while in boarding house, and students sleeping in hotels with girlfriends and later lying and making it look as if it is politically motivated, schools going on rampage to destoy property and life with flimsy excuses. (KOSS IPS etc) have been reported. Indiscipline is in all our schools not KUHIS alone so please lets address the issue from a wider perspective. Include all schools in the country if we want a descent society. After all what is the percentage of KUHIS students in the university?

  • Abrante dougie: No wonder!!!! He just want to close the door for one group of students(kuhis) and open it for others(his old school) simply because of" whom you know basis" of admission favouring some schools (old boyism). He has simply given the dog a bad name to just kill it. Mr VC you cannot induce discriminition in our country.OUR NATIONAL EMBLEM IS FREEDOM AND JUTICE so you just cannot shift attention. His statement  can be compared to Hitler's discriminition of the JEWS.If a whole Prof of his  kaliber, can make  a discriminatory statement in this democratic Ghana but still no reaction was made by ministry of education or any higher authority, then our democracy is questionable.i think today is KUHIS but tomorrow it will be one of the tribes in Ghana. He has got a hidden agenda.stop him now.I agree we should ensure discipline in all school in ghana but not to single out a school.Presec students robbed a forex bureau in Kumasi and every one in ghana saw and heard it but he was then quite."Every home there is a MENSAH "so don't single out a "MENSAH" of kuhis and leave the "MENSAH" from you former school.I think personally he made it to please Mrs. Theodosia former headmistress of Kuhis.Donot use our school for "inter".we are waiting for you to be your ProF. statement.

  • Abrante FIGA : Why single out Kumasi High? Every school has its fair share of notoreity.

  • ABRANTE YUM:
shame on that "yeye" professor. i think that man does not deserve to be a vice-chancellor of a university. i think ghana-nians should forget about his academic qualifications and gowns and question his ugly utterances. why should he single out kumasi high school students on this matter? to be honest, i can't believe my ears why a learned professor who is a vice-chancellor of a reputable post-secondary institution in ghana can give such naive rhetorics. how can the university offer brilliant graduates if it's vice-chancellor cannot make critical analysis on sensitive issues? na yeye professor.

  • Abrante TONY ASIEDU
OH !!!! HO!!! I THINK IF THIS WAS AN EXAM ANSWER , THEN IT MEANS THE PROF WITH THAT BIG HEAD HAS SERIOUSLY AND TOTALLY DEVEATED.

SURE PROF ANDAM SHOULD RESIT FOR THAT PAPER COS HE TRAILED.

NOW I SEE SEY NOT ALL PEOPLE WITH BIG BRAINS HAVE BIG WISDOM.

HONOURABLE PROF NEXT TIME LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP.
